SITE OVERVIEW
Converting waste and wastewater into energy, reusable water and valuable fertiliser products
Built in partnership with Rainbow Chickens, the Rustenburg plant processes manure and organic-rich waste streams generated from the production of more than 350,000 birds per day. This facility combines waste treatment, water recovery and renewable energy generation within a single integrated system.
THE CHALLENGE
The operation faced rising costs associated with wastewater treatment, manure disposal and concerns around energy supply. Historic manure stockpiles created environmental concerns, while increasing concerns about water and energy resources highlighted the need for a more sustainable and self-sufficient solution.
THE SOLUTION
We developed a comprehensive waste-to-value system that converts organic-rich waste into renewable energy, reusable water and valuable fertiliser products. The facility reduces dependence on landfill disposal, municipal infrastructure and traditional energy sources.
Technology & Process
Organic-rich sludge waste and poultry manure are processed using anaerobic digestion to produce biogas. The biogas is converted, through a combined heat and power unit, into electricity and thermal energy. Water is recovered through advanced treatment and reverse osmosis systems, while nutrient-rich by-products are converted into registered fertilisers.
THE OUTCOME
The facility significantly reduced the requirement of costly discharge of solid waste streams offsite, as well as ongoing municipal discharge costs. By converting waste streams into energy, water and fertiliser products, the project delivers environmental and commercial value across the operation. This all results in a reduced carbon emission footprint.
