Mauritius (EDM), Southern Africa Build, Own, Operate (BOO)

SITE OVERVIEW

Transforming industrial wastewater into sustainable value

Located in Mauritius, the EDM facility treats wastewater from three major fish processing operations that form part of the island’s seafood export industry. The site supports a sector that plays an important role in employment, exports and the broader Mauritian economy.

THE CHALLENGE

Industrial discharges into the local sewerage system, rivers and coastal environments had become a growing concern for regulators and local communities. With tourism serving as a key economic driver for Mauritius, operators were required to implement sustainable wastewater solutions and demonstrate clear plans for environmental improvement.

THE SOLUTION

We partnered with the IBL Group to design and operate a centralised treatment facility capable of managing multiple wastewater streams. The project provided a practical pathway to compliance while creating opportunities to recover value from waste and extend the useful life of critical industrial operations.

Technology & Process

Wastewater from three fish processing facilities is processed through anaerobic digestion. Nutrients are recovered through phosphate removal technologies, while Africa’s first industrial-scale Anammox further reduces nitrogen loading. Biogas is supplied directly to clients for steam generation within their operations.

THE OUTCOME

The facility significantly reduced environmental impact, improved compliance and lowered wastewater-related costs. Renewable biogas now supports industrial energy demand, while recovered nutrients create local agricultural value. The distinctive blue treatment tanks have become a recognised symbol of industrial sustainability in Mauritius.
